The Importance of Thermal Insulation

The most important factor in fuel saving is that your home must be well insulated. If your insulation is up to standard, this will make a big difference to your fuel savings. All the same, if it is a flat in an apartment building where the flats above or below are not being heated, this will result in a loss of heat from your home to the other flats, and increased fuel consumption. It is also essential that the uppermost flat has excellent roof insulation. If we correct these kinds of deficiencies, we will make significant fuel savings.

It is important to measure and monitor the temperature of your home regularly with the help of a thermometer

Thermometers should be wall-mounted in areas such as the living room or dining room, and the temperature must be monitored. 22°C is an ideal temperature for the winter months. If there is no room thermostat to maintain this temperature, temperature adjustment can be made on the combi boiler. That is to say, if the combi boiler is set at 60°C, and the thermometer in our home shows 24-25°C, then the boiler temperature adjustment is clearly too high. In this case, you can reduce the temperature on the combi boiler to 45-50°C so that the room temperature falls to 22°C. Adjusting the combi boiler to reduce the radiator water temperature by 5°C will give a reduction of approximately 1°C in room temperature. This in turn offers a fuel saving of approximately 5-10%.

Using the room thermostat

Using a room thermostat can give us fuel savings of up to 10%. The location of the room thermostat is important. It should be located in a place where the temperature can be properly experienced (for example, on an interior wall or room). You can also check whether the room thermostat is operating at the correct setting by putting a thermometer next to it. According to global standards, the room thermostat should be set at 22°C which is the ideal temperature in winter conditions. If it is set higher than this, fuel expenditure will increase. If we set the thermostat to 22°C, but our home does not become sufficiently warm, the temperature on the combi boiler can be increased.

Using a modulating room control

The biggest difference between Bosch combi boilers and their competitors is that Bosch combi boilers can operate with a modulating room controller. The use of modulating room control ensures complete compatibility between your combi boiler and your home. These smart controls can adjust the output of your combi boiler to the requirements of your home. They keep the temperature in your home consistently at the level that you want while also achieving the ideal adjustment for the output of the combi boiler.

To give an example: A vehicle which is continually stopping and starting in traffic burns more fuel, is subjected to increased wear, and is at greater risk of breaking down. On the other hand a vehicle which adjusts its speed according to the traffic status will start and stop less frequently, burn less fuel, and prolong its service life. Combi boilers which operate with modulating control adjust their output according to the requirements of your home in winter with less stopping and starting. This provides fuel savings and extends the service life of the appliance.

The importance of thermostatic valves

Thermostatic valves give us separate control of the temperature in each room in our home. Thermostatic valves are fitted to radiators, and are equipped with a temperature adjustment. Consequently we can set a different temperature for each room. For example, we can set our kitchen at 20°C and the children’s room for 24°C. At the same time, if there are rooms which receive sunlight, thermostatic valves fitted in those rooms will sense the warmth of the sun, and shut off, preventing that room from becoming warmer. This is an added saving.

In cold weather, instead of turning the combi boiler off at night, it is more economical to run it at low temperature.

The ideal is 22°C during the day and 18°C at night. If you have a room thermostat, it should be set to these values. If there is no room thermostat, then the temperature in the room can be measured with a thermometer and the temperature should be set on the combi boiler so that the room remains at 18°C at night. If our home is well insulated, and the temperature does not fall too much when we turn off the combi boiler at the end of the evening, there is no need to run the combi boiler at night.

Running our combi boiler at the lowest temperature will always give you more savings

What is important here is to heat our home to an appropriate temperature. For this reason fitting a room thermostat is really important because it ensures that temperature of our home is always maintained at the ideal level. If there is no room thermostat, then the temperature of the home can be measured with a thermometer and we must then set the temperature on the combi boiler so that the temperature in the home will be 22°C. This boiler temperature setting will vary depending on how well insulated the house is. That is to say, in one house setting the combi boiler at 55°C will maintain the home at 22°C, but in another house we may be able to maintain the home at 22°C by setting the combi boiler at 45°C. This depends entirely upon the conditions in the home (its area, its aspect, the insulation, the number of radiators etc.) The combi boiler operating temperature which will achieve the ideal room temperature may vary.

Keeping the temperature of your home at 22°C during the winter months is a comfortable setting

If in spite of this you feel chilly, this temperature can be increased. But in this case, your fuel consumption will start to increase. Keeping your home at an ideal temperature, whatever it is, means increasing the fuel consumption by 5-7%. Consequently, wearing warmer clothing in winter and maintaining the humidity level in the home at a particular level (50-55%) will increase your feeling of warmth and help you to feel warm at lower temperatures. This in turn will give you savings.

The importance of periodic combi boiler maintenance and radiator cleanness

During the winter your combi boiler will operate for approximately 3-4 months for an average of 6-7 hours a day. During the course of this operation it is quite normal that grime will build up on the surfaces of the combi boiler over time. This interferes with heat transfer and reduces the efficiency of the combi boiler. Consequently, you must have your combi boiler maintained every year and you must have a heating engineer flush the radiators in your system.

The importance of ensuring that the area around your radiators is unobstructed

If you have radiators behind curtains in particular, the curtains must be drawn apart and the radiator surfaces must not be covered. Insulation must also be installed between the radiator and the external wall. In this way the heat energy does not escape but remains in the room instead. As far as possible, avoid blocking the front of radiators with armchairs or other furniture.

The importance of condensing combi boilers in making savings

Condensing combi boilers are, regardless of the area or operating temperature of your home, always more economical when compared with conventional combi boilers. If the operating temperatures are low and/or there are more radiators, the efficiency will be even greater. Condensing combi boilers are highly advanced in terms of their operating principle and technology, and are very economical appliances. As from September 2015 their use became compulsory in countries within the European Union, and they will soon be compulsory in Turkey also.
